Helping our neighbors build barns
During Nathaniel Talbott's RailsConf 2006 talk "Homesteading: A Thriver's Guide", he mentioned the concept of "barn-raising" as applied to the RoR community.
Someone with a vision for a project -- a barn -- would gather some materials -- SVN repo, some tests, user stories, pizza, beer -- and invite the community over to help raise the barn -- bring the application from nothing to something. It still needs paint, the doors need to be attached, and the floor isn't laid, but the community helped get you started.
This idea really resonated with some of us at the talk, and so we started this site. The aim is to be a community where people can say, "I'll help you raise your barn, and in return, I'll look to you to help me with mine."
This site is brand new. In fact, one of the first barns we work on may be this one, our community barn. We're not sure where this will go. But if you'd like to help your neighbors get started at their homestead, and if you think you may need help with your barn, too ... please sign up.
